Artificial Intelligence transparency statement
The NIISQ Agency is committed to the safe, responsible and ethical use of automation and artificial intelligence (AI). This statement explains our current approach to using automation and AI. It is published in line with the requirements of the Digital Transformation Agency’s Standard for AI transparency statements.
This statement was last updated on 14 April 2026.
Why we use automation and AI
Our approach to automation and AI is centred around people. We use automation and AI to deliver fair, consistent and supportive services to people injured by motor vehicle and work accidents. By using automation and AI responsibly, we aim to improve experiences and outcomes for participants, provide faster access to essential supports, and make our processes more efficient.
We do not use AI in situations where participants directly interact with it, or where its outputs could affect them significantly without being checked by a human.
In the future, we may explore wider use of automation and AI to further improve how NIISQ delivers services.
How we use automation and AI
- reducing or eliminating administrative tasks
- analysing data to find useful insights
- improving workplace productivity
- processing images
- checking compliance and detecting fraud
- reviewing policies and legal frameworks
- corporate and support functions.
Automation and AI help us make smarter decisions by uncovering useful information from data and automating tasks that take a lot of time. This allows our teams to focus on what matters most – ensuring participants have access to the treatment, care and support they need.
Our approach to AI
We are committed to using AI in ways that are safe, fair, transparent and guided by strong ethical principles.
Here’s how we ensure responsible use of automation and AI:
- Safe testing: we learn and test new AI technologies in a safe and controlled environment before using them more widely.
- Strong rules: before we use new AI technologies, we follow a structured process. This includes checking for risk and bias and ensuring they meet government policies, frameworks and best practices.
- Human checks: AI helps with tasks, but all outputs are reviewed and approved by staff.
- Regular monitoring: we regularly ask for feedback from users and monitor AI systems to make sure they work as expected.
- Staff training: we train our staff so they can use AI safely and effectively.
- Working together: we share knowledge with other agencies and stay up to date with changes to government policies and best practices to ensure our use of AI is responsible and effective. We work with our Participant Reference Group to understand what is important to participants in the use of AI.
Accountability
We will review this statement at least once a year. We will update it sooner if the way we use AI changes or if new information needs to be added.
