November 2025 Participant Reference Group roundup
November 21, 2025
The National Injury Insurance Scheme Queensland (NIISQ) Agency recently held a milestone Participant Reference Group (PRG) meeting, marking a day of collaboration, innovation, and empowerment. All ten members of the current PRG attended the meeting in person for the first time. The occasion was especially significant for one member, who had not travelled since being flown home by the Royal Flying Doctors Service five years ago. This milestone was made possible through careful planning and collaboration with the Queenslanders with Disability Network (QDN). It was a huge moment for her and we, as an Agency, were proud to be a part of it.
The meeting included updates on key business initiatives that PRG members had previously contributed to, reinforcing the active role the group plays in shaping projects and work to ensure our processes continually improve. A highlight was the presentation on the Virtual Reality (VR) Wheelchair Project Simulation. Dr Robert Cuthbert and PRG member JJ Hitchens shared their innovative research, which uses VR technology to improve how motorised wheelchairs are chosen. The group was inspired by JJ’s input, showing how lived experience can lead to important changes for people with spinal cord injuries.

The meeting included a co-design session led by trauma-informed practice expert Penny Gordon. Agency staff complete annual training to strengthen their understanding of trauma-informed approaches, and this year, PRG members were invited to provide insights into developing a new training component for 2026.

Rounding out the day was an engaging discussion on artificial intelligence (AI). The group was introduced to the basics of AI and explored how NIISQ is using this transformative technology. The conversation sparked lively dialogue, with members showing strong interest in AI’s potential and requesting more sessions in the future.
The PRG meeting highlighted the incredible value of bringing together a group of passionate and dedicated individuals with lived experience to drive meaningful change. The insights, expertise, and collaboration of the PRG members continue to shape innovative projects like the Virtual Reality Wheelchair Project and the development of trauma-informed training. Their contributions demonstrate the value of involving participants in decision-making, ensuring their voices help shape initiatives that directly impact them.
