Celebrating 9 years of NIISQ

Since 1 July 2016, the National Injury Insurance Scheme, Queensland (NIISQ) has been dedicated to providing lifetime treatment, care, and support for people who have sustained serious personal injuries in motor vehicle accidents on Queensland roads.
Over the past nine years, we’ve worked tirelessly to ensure our participants receive the support they need to achieve their goals, maximise their independence, and return to their communities. Our approach is guided by the principles of collaboration and informed decision-making, offering evidence-based treatment, care, and support tailored to individual needs.
Our journey so far
As we celebrate this milestone, we’re proud to reflect on some of the key achievements that have shaped NIISQ’s impact:
Key achievements
Supporting participants
- We have accepted almost 1000 participants and currently support more than 660 participants (including workers).
- Partnered with participants to develop more than 4,000 personalised MyPlans (support plans) that reflect their unique goals and aspirations.
- Funded $339 million in treatment, care and support, including wheelchairs to 222 participants to improve their mobility.
Promoting independence
- Enabled participants to regain independence through tailored rehabilitation programs and assistive technologies.
- Supported participants to return to their communities, workplaces, and schools.
Driving innovation
- Established the Participant Reference Group to provide participants and their families with a voice and opportunity to influence and improve the services and information we deliver in a way that is meaningful for them
- Developed and launched NIISQ Direct, a co-designed participant portal offering visibility, flexibility and control for participants and their close contacts to view and access their information.
- Introduced innovative care solutions to improve participant outcomes, including advancements in assistive devices and rehabilitation techniques.
- Collaborated with leading experts to ensure our services remain evidence-based and forward-thinking.
Building strong partnerships
- Fostered relationships with healthcare providers, community organisations, and other stakeholders to deliver high-quality, coordinated care.
- Supported research and education projects in partnership with Universities and Health Services across Queensland, aimed at improving the treatment, care and support that is available to NIISQ participants. A full list of current projects is available here.
- Worked closely with participants and their families to ensure their voices are at the centre of decision-making.
Commitment to excellence
- Maintained a strong focus on continuous improvement, ensuring our services evolve to meet the changing needs of participants.
- Actively engaged with stakeholders to gather feedback and enhance the quality of care provided.

While we’re proud of what we’ve achieved over the past nine years, our journey is far from over. NIISQ remains committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of participants and their families. We’ll continue to innovate, collaborate, and advocate for the best possible outcomes for those we support.
