Research funding update – Growing Assistive Technology Solutions in Queensland

Have you heard of assistive technology? It’s a cutting edge space of  functional devices, systems or other types of support that help people  perform tasks that might otherwise have been difficult or impossible.

Assistive technology helps empower NIISQ participants to achieve their goals, be more independent and participate fully in their communities. At the NIISQ Agency, we’re really interested in how our participants can access the right assistive technology at the right time after their injury.

We’re excited to announce that we have teamed up with Griffith University to support the Growing Assistive Technology Solutions in Queensland project. It will support the capability development of providers across Queensland when considering and recommending assistive technology, providing an essential building block that will help NIISQ participants access the right assistive technology solution when it’s right for them in their rehabilitation and recovery journey.

It will use multiple methods including interviews, surveys and workshops to understand the different types of needs related to assistive technology provision and interpret this information to inform future actions. Focus will be on the needs of people who use assistive technology, as well as service providers/ health professionals and care and support scheme representatives.

People with disability will also be actively engaged in the design and implementation of the project across all stages including on the reference group and partnering with researchers to undertake project activities. Involvement of other stakeholders such as peak bodies, service providers and care and support scheme agencies is also embedded within the project. The NIISQ Agency is investing $104,087 in the collaboration, which is expected to be completed by 2022. You can read more about what’s involved by clicking here.
